Nayathara entered the tinsel world debuting in the Malayalam
film 'Manassinakkare', directed by Sathyan Anthikad opposite
Jayaram (2003). The Kerala-born Christian girl from
Tiruvalla, whose real name is Diana Kurien, had completed
her B.A. literature and was doing her Chartered accountancy
when films beckoned her. Her striking appearance and acting
talent was appreciated by the Kerala audience. The huge
commercial success of "Manassinakkare" helped her career in
a big way.
Then came her second film, "Vismayathumbath"(2004) by Fazil,
with super star Mohanlal. Though the film did not fare well
at the box office, Nayanthara has become a noted actress in
Kerala film industry. Her pretty looks captured the
attention of Malayalam film buffs. She again did a film with
Mohanlal, "Natturajavu".

Interview with Nayanthara
Looking pretty and glamorous in a black outfit, Nayanthara
was late by an hour for the press meet, apologised
profusely, and went on to answer the questions fielded to
her.
How was it to act with Rajinikant?
"He used to come and see every shot. If it was good he'll
appreciate it… and if he felt there could be an improvement…
he's very dedicated, sincere and punctual. We can learn a
lot from him personally and professionally.:."
What's her character like in 'Chandramukhi'?
"My name is Durga in the film. I knew it was not the lead
character when I committed to it... but I'm very happy with
it, and that I'm paired with the Superstar…", says the
actress.
On why she's acting with only senior heroes…
"I got offers only with senior actors that's why… and when
you get an offer with Rajini Sir, you don't say 'no'... I
didn't have any feeling of age difference, but I don't know
if he felt it. With Sharat Kumar too it was a very
comfortable experience…"
Her roles so far, whether it was her Malayalam films or her
two Tamil releases, have been homely ones. Would she do
glamorous roles where it needs some revealing outfits?
"If the character demands one to be modern, one has to. We
can't keep a boundary for glamour. It depends on the
character and on each person too, as to how much she wants
to expose... and also how comfortable she's doing it. In my
case, it depends on my role. If it demands glamorous
outfits, I'm not averse to it. I've not as such set a
boundary for it."
What's the difference between acting in Malayalam cinema and
Tamil cinema? While most actors say that the two are not
very different, Nayanthara speaks differently.
"The two fields are totally different. Where the
remuneration is concerned, and also where the script and
charecterisation is concerned. Tamil industry has a bigger
market. In Tamil films they give more importance to glamour
elements and songs…"
A scribe asked her about the casting couch. The actress
didn't understand it. Someone from the back quipped
'compromises?'
Nayanthara again failed to catch it, had a hasty
consultation with her manager and then replied, "I cannot
really say anything right now. I'm very new to the Malayalam
and Tamil industry."
